I will try and do a fuller write-up (time permitting) in the possession football thread here
http://community.sigames.com/showthr...ssion-FootballTwo points first:
This is still all using the 16.1.1 ME. I have no idea yet what the update has done to how I play (positive or negative)
This is all with Bayern, a team expected to dominate. I can't say to what effect certain results could be attributed to opposition just sanding off my team
I didn't see that possession thread before I started but most of it applies. Two deviations from what I can see outlined there though. I've used a fluid or very fluid structure and higher tempo.
I've seen and dabbled with possession tactics that use a much slower tempo and while that (from what I observed) will get your possession number up, I was personally after a greater number of passes. Moving the ball around much more to get the opposition chasing. With a lower tempo I'd see defenders just standing with the ball whilst clocking up possession, which is great in achieving what it set out to do i.e. retain the ball but it just wasn't what I aimed for.
Player PPM's have been by far the biggest impact for me. I first tried with Arsenal and many of their players have variations of 'runs with ball often' PPM, which wasn't in any way conducive to a heavy passing style I was after. Even if you have team instructions set to dribble less you'll still get the likes of Sanchez and Walcott running all over with the ball most of the time. It's still very possible to end up with 60%+ of the ball but I found it to greatly increase the chances of turning the ball over.
The most important PPM I've found has been 'Tries to play way out of trouble', which unfortunately can't be tough. I've seen lots of times players randomly hoofing a big ball up the pitch even with seemingly open short options available. With this PPM players seem much more calm and prone to keeping hold of the ball. I think the 16.2 patch notes cover something regarding the long balls though.
If you really want to play a specific way, my advice would be look at player PPM really closely, they can hugely change how your team functions and veers away from how you think your tactic should perform.
Some of the PPM's I've stayed away from.
Any sort of shoots from distance
Any dribbling PPMs
Trying to unlearn dwells on ball
Tries long range passes
And ones that seem to be working well
Plays way out of trouble
plays one-twos
comes deep to get ball
Switching the ball to opposite flank (pretty good for my defenders working the ball out)
Short/simple passing
Dictates tempo
Stops play (I've seen this be useful in allowing my team to regain shape and find space while my player's wait for a pass)
This is by no means a "do this and all will work" but it's got me to a style of play I always wanted to see.
