IAN FOSTER STATEMENTIn the light of recent events regarding Neale Fenn, I would like to release the following statement:In February 2010 I signed Neale Fenn following his release from Bohemians. We were the only club in the market for Neale at this time, however, we still endeavoured to make Neale our highest earner at the football club. In early March 2010 I made Neale our vice captain. He went on to make 29 appearances for Dundalk FC, captaining the side on nine occasions. On Thursday 22nd of July, the day Dundalk played Levski Sofia at home, Neale informed me of his wish to retire from the game. As it was the day of an important game, I asked Neale if we could discuss the matter further on Saturday 24th. Following our discussions on that day, Neale explained that he wanted to retire for family reasons, all of which I sympathised with greatly. I asked Neale to give me a few days to acquire a suitable replacement. On Thursday 29th July we announced the retirement of Neale Fenn and the signing of Matthew Tipton simultaneously. Neale’s contract was terminated by mutual consent and the cancellation was sent to the FAI. There was absolutely no reason whatsoever not to cancel his contract as he had stated explicitly his desire to retire from the sport due to the aforementioned family reasons. The events that followed are totally unacceptable. I am saddened that a man who was so integral to our season would act in such a callous manner. He has been disrespectful to his team-mates, myself, directors and supporters of Dundalk FC. His actions go against the spirit of the sport. At Dundalk FC we always try to do things the right way, in the right manner and with integrity. I do not believe that others have acted in the same way.I believe that the Footballers union, the PFAI should publicly condemn his actions and the precedent that it may set in our sport. In the future I would like to think that if a similar situation like this came up again, that I would conduct myself in the same manner and allow a player to retire for the sake of him and his family. STATEMENT FROM NEALE FENN THROUGH PFAI Having regard to statements released on Thursday 5 August 2010 by Dundalk Football Club and Dundalk Football Club manager, Mr Ian Foster, I feel it necessary to clarify my position. The situation is that for reasons which were mutually beneficial to the club and myself it was agreed last month that my contract would be cancelled. At that stage I had not been contacted by any other club and had intended to retire. However, shortly after it became public in the media that I had been released, and was therefore a free agent, I received a call from Mr Michael O'Neill, Shamrock Rovers manager, who offered me an opportunity I could not turn down.I have always had the utmost respect for Dundalk Football Club and their supporters and I am very disappointed that any adverse allegations are being made. I am happy that I have always acted properly, fairly and within the rules of the Association.
